Elanor the Fair married Fastred of Greenholm.  They removed to the Westmarch, a country then newly settled (being a gift of King Elessar) between the Far Downs and the Tower Hills.  From them came the Fairbairns of the Towers, Wardens of Westmarch, who inherited the Red Book and made several copies with various notes and later additions.

JRR Tolkien;  notes from the Longfather-Tree of Master Samwise

Now my hair it may be silver grey
But it once shone bright as gold
And the flowers bloomed in springtime like my name
And before my time is o'er
There's a story to be told
It's been writ down in the book
All you children take a look
For it's all about the long ago
About some folks you'll never know
About unlikely heroes
And a true and lasting flame

When I was young as you are now
I sat by my father's knee
And he told me stories wondrous and true
The pages of this book are filled
With hard-won memories
Of a journey filled with danger
Of friendship and of strangers
An evil come into the land
A golden Ring, a trembling hand
A time when shadows threatened
All the things we loved and knew

It was all so long ago, long ago...
As the river runs down to the Sea
Flowers bloom and grow
Starlight shines on earth below
And stories bless us with a memory

Now my father was a gentle soul
Of simple, rustic make
His life was in the earth and in his hands
But he made a sacred promise
That his heart would not forsake
Traveling far from home and hearth
He had sworn to do his part
Steadfast servant, loyal friend
Shield and shelter, comfort lend
A quest of deadly peril
By his Master's side to stand

His Master bore a burden dark
And hard as diamonds cold
When the shadow fell around him like a shroud
A scholar and a poet
He was neither brave nor bold
Accepted the appointed task
Starlight held within the glass
And as his hope and spirit fled
Step by step, determined tread
His purpose never wav'ring
His fate sealed by his vow

It was all so long ago, long ago...
As the river runs down to the Sea
Flowers bloom and grow
Starlight shines on earth below
And stories bless us with a memory

Battles raged across the land
With sword and shield and bow
As two small souls trudged weary towards their goal
Royal kings and common men
Against a deadly foe
Thundering hoofs across the plain
Great and good amongst the slain
Chances fading, hope was lost
Never yield, whate'er the cost
But grace through mercy given
Would finally save us all

It was all so long ago, long ago...
As the river runs down to the Sea
Flowers bloom and grow
Starlight shines on earth below
And stories bless us with a memory.

And now they both have gone away
Across the sund'ring Sea
To where the light and singing never fade
And they left behind a story
And entrusted it to me
Of daring deeds and promise kept
Dark and fire, anguish wept
Pain and sorrow, desperate quest
Courage holding to the test
Of hope beyond all measure
And love forever staid

It was all so long ago, long ago...
As the river runs down to the Sea
Flowers bloom and grow
Starlight shines on earth below
And stories bless us with a memory.
