At What Cost
King and Sacrifice
Category: Drama
Date: 2003-05-10

Shadow-crowned, the Prince of men
Striding through an exile's dream
Nothing gained 'til now
It seems:
His life... his love... the past

Shadow-blinded, Halfling Prince
Failure's not a choice to make
Too long along the road
Forsake:
Your life... your love... the future

Beloved of the sylvan kin
Guarded treasures he holds well
Keeping them from darken spell
Content to bide his days

Delighting in the simple ways
Your neverending dreams in summer
Carefree laughing, ceaseless wonder
This gift will be your bane

Thrown together--tall one, halfling
Two sides of the same bright coin
In a quest compelled to join
Their weaknesses and strengths

Bound once, twice, and yet again
From fear comes love and trust and faith
To vanquish spell of ring and wraith
Cold within their breasts

The fated spiral draws them in
One's destined goal: a crown to gain
In payment's tithed the other's pain
The blessing and the curse

He draws his sword against the Dark
Protector, comrade, standing tall
Hands to hold you when you fall
A rock against your back

Yet even he cannot prevent
The doubts that surface in your mind
Your heartfelt cry as evil's twined
In knots about your soul

Solitude must be your cloak
Or it will take them, one by one
To madness all they will succomb
Surrender them or fail!

His fate has yours unwitting set:
No mortal heart can in the end
Endure black flame, remain your friend
"Protect me from yourself!"

He kneels and clasps your cold, small hands
"I would have followed you through fire
"Forsaking all my own desire
"But I must let you go."

Desperately you plead of him:
"Take care of them, they must not know
"The darkling paths where I must go
"Look after them, my brother."

The Ring, it whispers in their palms
Pledges glory and despair
Burns the hobbit's heart so fair
Rends Fellowship to shreds

King shall return--but at what cost!
The teind is paid in blood and tears
The price too high, this one so dear
By fiery wheel consumed
